About the Marketplace Pricing & Profit Calculator

Most handmade and marketplace sellers price by gut feeling, then wonder why they're working evenings and weekends for less than minimum wage. This tool works the other way round: tell it what your time, materials and marketplace fees actually cost, and it tells you the price that pays you properly — plus what happens to your profit if a fee, material cost or discount changes.

Who it's for

Etsy and eBay sellers, CNC makers, laser engravers, 3D print sellers, resin artists, woodworkers and market-stall traders who make physical products and want a repeatable way to price them, rather than re-guessing every time a supplier puts their prices up.

Common uses

How to use it

  1. Pick "Load Example Product" to see the calculator populated, or start entering your own product's materials, packaging and postage.
  2. Add each production step with its time and any consumable or machine cost — this builds your true labour cost.
  3. Set your target hourly rate and desired margin or markup, then choose your selling platform.
  4. Check the fee preset for that platform matches your actual account, editing anything that's changed.
  5. Read the recommended price, warnings and plain-English summary, then adjust any figure to see the price update instantly.

Frequently asked questions

How does this calculator work out my recommended price?

It adds up your materials, packaging, postage, labour time (at your target hourly rate) and machine costs, spreads that over your reject/waste allowance, then works backwards through the selected platform's fees, your discount allowance and ad allowance so the leftover still meets your target profit margin or markup.

Are the marketplace fees built into this tool accurate?

They're realistic starting points, not live data — marketplaces change their fees regularly. Every fee field is editable, and you should check your own seller dashboard for current rates before relying on the numbers.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a percentage of your cost. Margin is profit as a percentage of your final selling price. The same product needs a higher markup percentage than margin percentage to reach the same cash profit.

Does this tool store or send my product data anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your figures are saved locally on your device, and you can export a project file any time to back up or share your work.
